Being Over 60 Does Not Come With a Sensible-Eyeglasses Requirement
I recently got three new pairs of glasses, and none of them are what I would call sensible. One pair is soft and pearly, one is a bold black-and-white cat-eye, and one is unapologetically pink.
I love every one of them.
And honestly, I think women over 60 should have a lot more fun with glasses.
Who Decided Women Over 60 Need Boring Glasses?
There seems to be this strange idea that once women reach a certain age, everything about us is supposed to get quieter. Our clothes get more conservative, our hair gets more practical, and our makeup is supposed to become more restrained.
Then there are the glasses.
Apparently those are supposed to become sensible too.
I have never understood that. If anything, I think getting older gives us more freedom to wear exactly what we like, because by now we usually know ourselves pretty well.
We know what colors we love. We know what makes us feel good. And we know when something feels like us.
So why would this suddenly be the time to start playing it safe?
Fun Glasses for Women Over 60 Can Change Your Whole Look
Glasses are not a tiny accessory. They sit right in the middle of your face, and if you wear them every day, they become a big part of your overall look.
That is exactly why I think they should have some personality.
A fun frame can brighten your face, make a simple outfit look more stylish, and give you an easy way to add color without changing anything else. You can wear jeans and a plain T-shirt and still look pulled together because your glasses are doing some of the work.
And none of that stops being true because you are over 60.
In fact, I think glasses can become even more fun as we get older. You may not want to completely reinvent your wardrobe, but a new pair of frames can give you a fresh look almost instantly.
My Three New Pairs Could Not Be More Different
I did not intentionally set out to buy three pairs that looked completely different from each other. It just happened that way.
Now I am glad it did.
The first pair has a soft, pearly look. They are light and pretty, and they blend in a little while still having enough shape to be interesting.
They are probably the closest thing I own to a “sensible” pair.
Then there is the black-and-white cat-eye pair.
These are not shy glasses. They are bold, graphic, and a little retro, which is exactly what I like about them.
Then there are the pink ones.
They are bright pink, and I did not overthink them. I saw them, liked them, and decided that was reason enough.
Can Women Over 60 Wear Cat-Eye Glasses?
Absolutely.
Cat-eye glasses are one of those styles that sometimes get labeled as too bold, too retro, or too young for older women. I do not agree with any of that.

They can be elegant, playful, dramatic, or classic depending on the frame. The slight upward shape can also give the face a little visual lift, which is a nice bonus.
But I do not think you need a special reason to wear them.
Wear cat-eye glasses because you like them.
Wear them because they make a basic outfit feel a little more interesting. Wear them because you catch yourself smiling when you look in the mirror.
That is enough.
Can Older Women Wear Brightly Colored Glasses?
Of course we can.
I sometimes think color is one of the first things women are encouraged to give up as they get older. Suddenly everything is supposed to be beige, gray, taupe, black, or navy.
Those colors are fine if you love them.
But if you like pink, wear pink.

If you like red glasses, try red glasses. If you love blue, purple, green, tortoiseshell, or clear frames, there is no reason your age should stop you.
Bright glasses are also an easy way to add color if you do not want to wear bold clothing. A colorful frame can be enough to make your whole face look more lively.
Stop Asking, “Are These Glasses Too Young for Me?”
This is one of those questions women ask ourselves far too often.
And not just about glasses.
We ask it about hairstyles, clothes, makeup, shoes, jewelry, and almost anything else that feels a little fun.
“Am I too old for this?”
I think we need a better question.
Do I like it?
That is really what matters. If something makes you feel uncomfortable or unlike yourself, leave it behind, but if you genuinely love it, why should your birthday decide whether you are allowed to enjoy it?
I did not look at my pink glasses and wonder whether they were appropriate for a woman in her 70s.
I thought, “Those are cute.”
That was enough for me.
What Are the Best Glasses for Women Over 60?
I do not think there is one answer. The best glasses for women over 60 are the ones that fit properly, work with your prescription, feel comfortable, and make you happy when you see yourself wearing them.
That is going to look different for every woman.
Some women love delicate frames. Others love oversized frames, bold black glasses, soft translucent colors, or statement shapes.
Some women want one dependable pair they can wear with everything.
And some of us apparently want three completely different personalities sitting on the dresser.
There is no correct answer.
Glasses Can Be Fashion at Any Age

One of the things I like about glasses is that they are practical and stylish at the same time. I need them to see, but that does not mean I have to treat them like medical equipment.
They are part of what I am wearing.
They are part of my face, too.
That makes them part of my personal style, and I do not believe personal style has an expiration date.
If anything, I think style can get more interesting as we get older. We know ourselves better, and we are often less interested in wearing something just because everyone else is wearing it.
We can choose what works for us and leave the rest.
You Can Be a Grandma Without Wearing “Granny Glasses”
I use the phrase “granny glasses” jokingly because there is obviously nothing wrong with being a grandmother. What I find funny is the idea that becoming one means you are suddenly supposed to adopt a certain look.
You can adore your grandchildren and still wear pink glasses.
You can have gray hair and wear dramatic cat-eyes.
You can be 65, 72, 80, or 90 and still walk into an optical shop and pick the most interesting pair on the wall. There is no point where you are suddenly required to blend into the background.
Being older does not mean becoming invisible.
And it definitely does not mean we all have to start looking alike.
Do Not Be Afraid to Try the Unexpected Pair
If you are shopping for new glasses, try on something you normally would not. Pick up the colorful pair, the oversized pair, the cat-eye pair, or the frame that looks a little daring on the display.
You do not have to buy it.
Just try it.
Sometimes the pair you would never have chosen at first turns out to be the one that looks best on your face. Other times, it is simply the one that makes you grin.
That matters too.
Getting Older Does Not Mean Toning Yourself Down
This is really about more than glasses. It is about the way women are often encouraged to gradually become quieter as we age.
I do not buy that.
I still like makeup. I still like clothes, fun glasses, and finding things that make me feel pretty.
None of that means I am trying to look 30.
I am not trying to be younger.
I am trying to look like myself now, and there is a big difference between those two things.
Wear the Glasses You Love
If you love a quiet neutral frame, wear it. If you love giant pink glasses, wear those.
If you want leopard print, rhinestones, cat-eyes, bright blue frames, or something that makes someone ask, “Are you sure about those?” you may have found exactly the right pair.
We really do not need another list of things women should not wear after 60.
We have had enough of those.
I would much rather talk about all the things we can still enjoy. Fun glasses are definitely on that list.
So yes, I am keeping all three pairs.
The soft pearly ones.
The black-and-white cat-eyes.
And especially the pink ones.
Because being over 60 does not come with a sensible-frames requirement.
And I think that is a much more interesting way to look at getting older.
