Confession Time: Soap Opera Addict, Anyone?

I know I can’t be the only one! Which soap opera was your guilty pleasure?

Yes, I admit it—when my kids were little, I somehow got hooked on soap operas.

It started out innocently enough, of course. I’d put the kids down for a nap or hand them a snack, and before I knew it, I was sitting in front of the TV, completely engrossed in the lives of characters that were far more dramatic than my own.

Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, All My Children—take your pick. Somehow, I’d end up getting pulled into these emotional roller coasters. And I loved every minute of it.

There’s just something about a soap opera that draws you in. The drama, the betrayals, the love triangles that never seem to resolve—these shows knew how to keep you hooked.

It wasn’t just about entertainment; it was about escaping into another world, where everyone’s problems were bigger, messier, and way more dramatic than mine.

The Allure of Soap Operas

Let’s face it—soap operas were the original binge-watch before binge-watching was a thing. There was something oddly comforting about following the same characters through one absurd plot twist after another.

I’d laugh at the ridiculousness of someone miraculously coming back from the dead (again) or a love triangle that somehow lasted for decades. But you know what? I kept watching.

For me, it was an escape from the daily grind of raising kids, doing laundry, and keeping a household together.

For that hour or so each day, I got to immerse myself in a world where the biggest issue wasn’t what to make for dinner, but whether someone would reveal their long-lost sibling at the family reunion.

Guilt-Free Indulgence

Sure, it felt a little like a guilty pleasure at the time, but looking back now, I realize it was just my version of self-care.

As a mom, finding time to relax was hard enough, and these over-the-top soap operas were my escape hatch.

They gave me a break from reality and, in their own odd way, reminded me that my life wasn’t quite so chaotic after all (at least compared to these characters!).

Whether it was The Young and the Restless or One Life to Live, soap operas knew how to keep us coming back for more. And I know I can’t be the only one!

So, what was your guilty pleasure? Which soap opera had you hooked back in the day? Because let’s be real, we all had one. 😏
